Potholes.

Hey I didn't see a thread on potholes. I know alot of you guys have real nice wheels and Richmond has real bad potholes. So figured I'd post some I've hit or dodged to prevent others from hurting their wheels or tires.

195/Powhite/PowHite north. when you are going over the train tracks just before the 95/64 split at Laburnum Ave. The center lane to the right of that lane on the second bridge has 2 pretty big potholes spread apart. If you ride to the left of that lane you can miss it or avoid that lane completely.

64 W at Gaskins under the bridge the center lane has a pothole. If you move to the right of the center lane near the line you can miss it.

Midlothian Turnpike from Chippenham to Jeff Davis avoid.
I don't understand why that let it get so bad.
Belt Blvd just got fixed recently that was horrible also. Like riding on a dirt track and stuck in the grooves.

More later when I get street names.

any richmond city road is impossible for us to drive on. Anything where pavement levels change. On 295 they recently put a new piece of pavement down, the level change from old to new is damaging to my oil pan. Broad street, when you pass over Parham going east, in the very right lane, if I am doing 45+ and go down that dip, it feels like my car should snap in half. Any concrete dropped by trucks will tear things up. Pieces of the road going underneath the car has bent many subframe pieces or taken chunks out of my car. Any overpass on the interstate I scrape my oil pan on. So driving down to Florida without scrapping the oil pan is next to impossible. I am not talking about just scrapping the lip in the front, that's destroyed. It takes most the abuse because it's my warning buzzer. :huh : The oil pan is already leaking in another spot after welding it up the 4 days ago.

I'm trying. After I raise the oilpan up I will go lower. For right now 1.5" of clearance between the oilpan and ground is my limit.

My Cabrio isn't that low and driving in the snow here was horrible. The snow was coming up over the hood so I couldn't see unless I went slow and then kept getting stuck. I stopped one time to get the ice off my wipers and the road had about 9 inches of snow and the 15 inches of snow that was pushing up my front bumper. That crap is coming back up to stock tomorrow. Fed up my lower spoiler. I kick myself for not raising it up Friday before leaving work. Snow and low don't mix well for me with a daily driver. We got about 20 inches of snow.
I have to go to a friends to get the car tomorrow. He pulled it out of the road with his tractor. I couldn't move it in the snow. On a curve with a incline and it wanted to slide to the ditch. I just parked it and left. Called AAA. They said don't work in bad weather. I told him the same trucks they hire are out towing right now. So I guess they don't want the cheap AAA tows when they can get top $$$ for snow tows. He said they weren't sure about that. I said you know better than that. Then called a local tow company they said 6-9 hours before they could even think about towing it. Friend did it for free.

Still a long time considering. Now is the time to own a tow truck or tractor. then sell it fast cause it won't snow again for 5 years.

Douglasdale off Blvd across from the walking Park (just past where the black 84 GTI is always parked). Down Douglasdale at the stop sign a nasty pot hole. I thought I went in a manhole. Stay to the left.

I actually drove the vrt today. I put the stock NA lip on and took the euro one off for obvious reasons. I carved the ice with the oil pan and under carriage. it was exciting. Similar to off road trucks and jeeps doing 60+mph through a desert or jungle. I was doing 5mph down neighborhood roads.

I'm glad I bought a skid plate years ago. I would have never made it through chicago winters without it. It snowed like this about every 2 weeks up there. There's a good place to bend your rims on cary st toward down town around 6th street on the left lane. Also the shitty dips from downtown expressway to 64 w suck.

The R does quite well in the snow with the AWD even with nearly bald summer tires.

I fell into a huge pothole on River Rd last month, going up the hill toward Three Chopt from the Huguenot Bridge. Bent two wheels on the E36 and knocked it out of alignment. Took it up with the city attorney, looks like they'll hopefully be stroking me a check soon.

Here it is a few days later, after they filled it in, notice it's almost the size of a Jetta!

Richmond roads SUCK and it's not gonna be any better after all that snow/ice. :thumbsdown :

This pothole is "fixed" (Richmond fixed). It's now a smoother dip instead of a ditch.

64 E just before Dickerson Rd overpass. far left lane right side. It's a big hole. Best to hit middle lane if you can.

If you're driving east on broad and turn left onto pouncey tract there are two left turn lanes. The pavement in the right lane has sunken enough from traffic for me to lay frame.

On both sides of nuckols rd near the 295 overpass, there is enough of a crest in the road for me to drag frame.

Harrison right before you see the gym on your right where it intersects broad st. I go super slow around there regardless of how many cars are behind me. They're not paying for my H&R ultra-lows and vr lip if they break so they can wait :tongue :

"I fell into a huge pothole on River Rd last month, going up the hill toward Three Chopt from the Huguenot Bridge."

I hated that one but managed to miss it for the three weeks or so it took them to get someone out there.

Maybe you can explain the reimbursement policy? Where do you file and what proof do they need? I've hit so bad ones lately, but no damage done (so far).

Yea I wish I had been smart enough to miss it. The first and only time I saw it was about 0.02 seconds before I hit it... in the rain, in the dark. There were cones out but they weren't actually in or near the hole at the time :thumbsdown :

It's as easy as contacting the city attorney. I did it through email, politely explaining the situation. I included pics of the hole after it was patched, vid of cars going by to show how the hole was directly in the travel lane, pics of all the hubcaps scattered around there, vid of my bent wheels on a balancer, and a pic of the alignment machine screen that showed the right front toe-in. I was one of like 8 people who made claims for that particular hole. If they think it's valid they call you, then send you a letter, then it gets passed off to an outside claims management service, then that rep calls you for more info, etc. The whole thing should take 6-8 weeks. I'm at the tail end of that, waiting for a check to arrive hopefully by the end of the month, for two K1's and an alignment.
