Oil Type?

I'm going to do an oil change in the Rabbit. The previous owner said he used Mobil 1 0w40. That seems like an odd type of oil to use. The car has a 1.8l 8v. Any ideas?

Thanks

They must have read the European Formula on the Label... I always used 10w30 Mobil 1. But the 16v requires 20w/50 or Straight 40w. I used 0w40 in my mk3 ABA once and it would cut off and idle funny... So I went back to 10w30. I would use 10w40 or 20w50. How many miles on it?

5w30 or 10w30 is what I use in my 16v Scirocco. I believe the manual calls for 5w30. I've used 20w50 before but it is too thick in the winter I think.

Castrol Syntec, I use about 3 different types for the different engines I have. I used 20 50 in my 83 GTI It was syntec too. I can tell you it makes for a clean engine on the inside and have had a oil release years ago with that in another engine, and it did not hurt a thing. Royal Purple synthetic is in my VR6 turbo engine, very clean on the inside also. Some think the thinner the oil the more horsepower you get then the thinker 20-50 oil, I know a lot of people who use 20-50 in their drag race cars, comes down to what you like and feel good about. I have used Castrol products for about 20+ years.

I usually ran 10w40 in my Rabbits, if you run 5w30 lots of times the oil pressure light will come on at idle. Atleast thats been my experience.

The reason pepole run 20w50 in drag cars probably has more to do with engine temps then anything else, if you ran a really thin oil like 5w20 or something when they are running the shit out of the cars I imagine the oil would just thin out to much.

15w40 for race cars with a diesel filter for extra filtration. The car does have an oil cooler right?

 Just checkin. Keep an eye on oil temps and you should be good to go. If it doesn't warm up enough run a slightly lower weight.

I have an oil temp gauge so that will help out.
